Our Story
Bishopthorpe Cricket Club is a village cricket club with over a century of history, based at Ferry Lane in the shadow of the Archbishop of York's Palace. After years of declining numbers that nearly saw the club fold — at one point fielding as few as seven players — a pivotal AGM in January 2024 sparked a remarkable revival. The local community rallied, new volunteers stepped forward, and the club was reborn.
That turnaround led to a fourth-place finish and promotion, the launch of a midweek social side called the Riversiders, and the achievement of ECB Clubmark accreditation — a mark of excellence recognising the club's governance, safeguarding and development standards. Bishopthorpe also won the 2024 YCB Cricket Collective Connecting Communities Award.
Today the club competes in the York & District Senior League's Galtres Division 3 and is focused on growing the game in the village — from senior cricket through to All Stars junior programmes. Whether you're a seasoned player, a newcomer, or simply want to support your local club, everyone is welcome at Bish.
